Under the Boot: ETCO Research Takes a Look at Coil on Plug Connections

Focusing on the connection between the coil and the spark plug used in the coil on plug assemblies, this paper compares and evaluates an assortment of industry standard coil to plug connections. It applies various tests and measurements, which expose each connecting device to the same conditions, providing an, "apples to apples" comparison and use these studies to gage the connection devices performance and develop ideas for improvement. Figures illustrating distributor cap with terminal towers, electronic ignition coil pack, voltage drop fixture, 13.8 VDC regulated power supply, control box circuitry, complete voltage measurement set-up, and 2 channel 50 MHz oscilloscope are also included. The paper recommends that under these conditions, a connecting device should be retained by a physical coupling offering resistance to movement at the point of connection.
